Sutton’s MP addresses Traidcraft event on 'Trade with the Developing World post Brexit'

On Friday 24th February over 40 people gathered at Wylde Green United Reformed Church to meet with Andrew Mitchell MP, with local Councillor Andrew Hardie also in attendance.

To kick start Fairtrade Fortnight (27th Feb – 12th March) the Traidcraft team at Wylde Green URC invited Sutton’s MP to join them and discuss their concerns on this issue and how the Government could put in place measures that would safeguard vulnerable people who trade with the UK. The UK will be in a position to negotiate its own trade agreements with developing countries as ‘we take back control’, one of the key platforms of Brexit.

Andrew Mitchell championed many initiatives that are still in place to ensure a level playing field for developing countries in trade negotiations, and felt strongly that such schemes ought to and would be continued after Brexit.

Andrew described Britain as an “International Development superpower”, and made clear his views that Brexit would not result in the UK turning its back on the poorest people in the world, and his confidence that the Government would uphold its commitment to developing countries.

More information can be found on www.traidcraft.co.uk/campaigns or by visiting the Traidcraft shop at Wylde Green URC – opening hours 10 am- 12.00 on Fridays & Saturdays.

Also all are welcome to a special event on Saturday 4th March : Coffee & Cake from 10.30am to 12.00, and a Soup Lunch served between 12.00 and 2.00pm.
