Royal Town’s MP visits controversially located care home on Maney Hill

Andrew Mitchell MP has visited Maney Hill Children’s Home in Sutton Coldfield for youngsters with ‘challenging behaviours’.

The care home - run by Meadows Care Limited, was subject to strong opposition before it was given the go-ahead by Birmingham City Council’s planning committee two years ago. Since operating, it has been the subject of repeated incidents which required the attendance of police and the fire service. However, the most disruptive individuals have now been relocated and the reputation of the home is now improving.

During the visit, Mr Mitchell made it clear that the events that have occurred over the past year were wholly unacceptable and that the Home would have to work hard to restore its reputation and standing in the local community. Mr Mitchell told Management that when disruptive individuals are drafted in, nobody in the community wins - including the children themselves as it becomes a vicious cycle of resentment.

Following the visit, Mr Mitchell said: “Since its inception, I have held deep reservations about the location’s suitability, but I have emerged from this meeting slightly more optimistic. The purpose of my visit was to understand the changes that had been implemented to improve the situation following complaints from my constituents.

“I have been assured that since the disruptive individual was removed last summer, matters have improved considerably. A ‘matching risk assessment’ has also been introduced, whereby Meadows Care would determine whether an individual is likely to cause significant disruption in the surrounding area.

“While this is a start, appropriate steps must continue to be taken to protect my constituents’ right to peaceful enjoyment of their property and I will continue to monitor the Home extremely carefully in this respect.”
