New Year Message from the Rt Hon Andrew Mitchell MP
There is no hiding that 2017 is set to be a difficult year - both domestically and internationally.
While we have made great strides in reasserting our identity in the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield, we face ongoing challenges. Not only do we now have the largest Town Council in the country, which has made an excellent start representing all our interests, but we also have our own Royal Mayor for the first time in 42 years. Our parliamentary boundaries appear to be secure, as is our Royal Status – we are one of only three Royal Towns in Britain.
Nevertheless we continue to suffer at the hands of Birmingham City Council, with threats to close our Library and build inappropriately on our Green Belt – something which our own national Government has proved itself powerless to stop.
Internationally the crises in the Middle East, the resurgence of Russia, and the general introspection of European powers, along with an isolationist approach from America are all matters of deep concern. In addition, Britain will need to chart the difficult journey out of the European Union.
These are all challenges to be faced, and as Sutton Coldfield’s Member of Parliament I shall continue to fight at all levels for the interest of our Royal Town and for all my constituents who live in it.
