Andrew Mitchell supports Tesco Christmas Food Bank

Sutton’s MP, accompanied by Town Councillor Louise Passey, has visited the pop up Foodbank collection point at Tesco in New Oscott. The initiative collects food for the Erdington Foodbank, and was seeking to build on the excellent total raised last year at the same location.

Mr Mitchell met with the Tesco Community Champions, along with the Store Manager and local foodbank volunteers. He was very pleased to learn that the total collected this year was 4534.45 tons of food – far surpassing the total collected any other years. This will go a long way towards feeding those who need support, especially over the Christmas period.

Andrew said “I am proud to see yet another display of the generosity of Suttonians, as well as an excellent example of a large corporation giving back to the local community. The coalition of supporters of this initiative are an impressive group, and such collaboration shows what can be done if there is good will”.

The Foodbank collection point has been supported, and manned, by volunteers from Tesco, The Wylde Green Rotary Club, Jaguar Landrover, Queensbury Special School and the Perry Barr Fire Service.

Erdington Foodbank provides, on average, emergency food for 75 people per week and relies entirely on donations from the public. It serves those who have been referred to the two centres in Erdington and are given three days’ supplies of food.

Mr Mitchell will also be visiting the Foodbank in Erdington in the New Year.
