Andrew Mitchell MP joins Sixth Form Fairfax students on Haiti fundraising day

Andrew Mitchell MP has visited Fairfax school to address a Sixth Form assembly and support their non-uniform fundraiser for the Haiti appeal.

Speaking at their Friday morning assembly, Mr Mitchell outlined the role of an MP, explaining how he represents the area and works to improve aspects of the town. He also spoke about how he represents individuals who may have fallen foul of the system and need advice, responding to some 500 letters and emails a week from constituents.

Andrew also urged students to use their vote in the upcoming General Election, and encourage their friends to do so.

Following the assembly, Fairfax’s A-Level politics students quizzed Mr Mitchell in a Q&A session. The session, led by politics teacher Mr David Knox, saw Mr Mitchell answer questions on a range of topics, from the role of the Opposition in the recession, to his views on whether the House of Lords should be an elected or hereditary chamber.

Andrew Mitchell said, “Congratulations to Fairfax for their fantastic fundraising efforts in aid of Haiti. It is yet another example of the generosity and compassion shown by Suttonians.

“I thoroughly enjoyed our Q&A session and was impressed by the interest the students showed in current affairs and politics.”
